Both sides of the debate use the city's carnage to argue their points.

The "two parent" analogy is totally ironic; I'd bet that most of the people involved in the shootings come from one parent families if that. Poor/ non existent parenting is largely the cause of bad behavior.

Chicago is the biggest "gun free zone" and is the biggest reason it is not the way to reduce crime. Enforce the existing laws.

Show me an outlaw that will obey the law and I will show you a Gun Control Law that will work. Connecticut has some of the strictest gun control laws in the US. Crazies and outlaws don't obey gun control laws.

What more proof does anyone need that strict gun bans, magazine limits etc. DO NOT WORK? The recent mass shootings also occured in 'gun-free zones', which is where all of these shootings happen. Columbine and other shootings happened in the MIDDLE of the last national 'assualt weapons' ban. The Sandy Hook school shootings happened in one the strictest gun-control states in the country, yet their strict bans and limits did NOT prevent the massacre. It is beyond any doubt that such bans and limits do NOTHING to prevent shootings. Yet the gun-banners refuse to see the obvious solution: eliminate all 'gun-free zones', and allow schools and the public to be able to protect themselves. The saying is true-'when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns'(see Chicago). What part of that don't the gun-haters understand?

So if you are baling water in the middle of the ocean, why would you be surprised if your boat sinks anyway? Chicago's trying to empty the boat but can't really close down the city to keep the ocean out. It's why federal mandates are needed. Then maybe the next generation will have a safer country. We had to do it with cars, we need to do it with guns. No one took all your cars away...

"Connecticut has some of the strictest gun control laws in the US. Crazies and outlaws don't obey gun control laws." And there lies the problem. At any point, one can become crazy for numerous reasons. Psychologists have stated that more than half of the people have some sort of mental illness. It seems that any little thing can and often does ignite a person to commit mass shootings, drugs, anger issues, self-perception of being cheated on in a relationship or at work. Most everybody is a ticking time bomb waiting to explode.

So we have laws that don't work, maybe making more laws to put on top of the other laws will make it work..right! I don't care if they do the same thing as Chicago in the whole state, or the whole nation- there will still be ways for criminals to get guns for illegal use. You'd only be punishing the rest of us who use them appropriately. NO THANKS. NO SIR. NO WAY. NOT IN MY LIFE.

This: "To gun-control proponents, the struggles in Chicago underscore the opposite -- a need for strict, uniform national gun laws to eliminate the current patchwork of state and local rules that allow guns to flow into this city from outside." just goes to show you how ignorant gun-control proponents are. If there were strict gun-controls in a neighborhood, they would say, we need citywide gun control because guns are getting in from the outside. Then when that doesn't work they will need statewide gun control because guns are getting in from the outside. Then (as now) they say we need national gun control because guns are getting in from the outside. Well, when they have national gun control, GUNS WILL GET IN FROM THE OUTSIDE (just as they admit they do now.) Why do you think that almost every gun grabber LOVES the United Nations. They believe the United Nations' worldwide gun control will ultimately solve the problem because they simply cannot wrap their heads around the fact that the guns aren't the problem. It's the people hellbent on exacting their uncivilized behavior on their generally unarmed victims. Whether these animals are mentally unbalanced naturally or got on the crazy train using SSRI's or have been raised to not give a damn about getting theirs through the proper methods a human being uses, hard work, thought and a rational approach to living as a free man.

It doesn't matter how strict the laws are in Chicago when you can just leave the city to get around them. Unless laws are applied at the national level they will have no affect.

I think Obama should go to his hometown and lecture the criminals and demand that they stop using firearms. He's good at lecturing.
