I have to disagree. While I may be talking about a different lake, I think the result will be the same. I have been fishing Rainy Lake for many years. Over the last handful, I have seen the decline in the number of fish below the 17" slot. Yes, there are nice fish above 17", but not many (relatively speaking) below. Here's my theory...When the slot is first put into place, people will keep the 16.5" fish to eat. Then the 16's, 15's, etc. When you constantly remove the 16" fish, you have very little (again, relative term) left to grow up. "Nothing" can ever reach 17" because everyone is keeping them. Now, if you want to eat walleyes, you need to keep 13" fish. One way, in my opinion, for the 13-16" fish to grow up, is to allow anglers to keep 1 slot fish. If I can keep 1 - 19" walleye, I can let 2 or 3 13" go.

Good! I am sick of catching 12" walleyes on Namakan.

With the slot, dumbshopper, you're going to keep catching the 12" fish. If you loosen the slot, or allow 1 fish from the slot, you allow those 12" to grow up. If not, people will continue to keep all of the 12-16" fish and then there is nothing to grow up.
