Uh-oh...better ban snowmobiles, and snow, for that matter! Someone might go crazy and try to hurt someone with one, despite its intended use for sports only!

Is there a reason a snow mobile doesn't have an "ignition shut off strap" attached to the driver's wrist similar to a water craft jet ski? If I were a sponsor or organizer of a future snow mobile event, I would not allow any snow ski to compete without an automated shutoff to the snow mobile. This is not rocket science. I believe one should consider the liability one could expect when such a simple remedy indicates some level of concern for the safety of the spectator(s).

It was a big air competition. You cannot have a strap with that event. The riders are twisting, spinning and flipping on the sled in the air. Just wouldn't work. One of those things. The snow fence worked.

Life is dangerous people and things happen. You can't safeguard everything unless you want to mandate that every person has to wear a bullet-proof vest and a helmet outside of their home...JUST in case. Wait, people could still fall down the stairs in their home, I guess it needs to be 24/7.

No, what happened is the "daredevil Aussie" was an idiot who had only actually ridden a snowmobile for FOUR HOURS> and only once before on snow. His excuse for what happened? He is used to motorcycles and hit the "clutch".....which is where the brake is on a snowmobile. Idiot should have never been doing tricks on equipment he didn't understand. Period.

jeffwill, from the article, "Jeremy Bester’s wife, Kerrie, said “all snowmobiles come with a tether kill switch. But when [competitors] are doing tricks, they don’t wear the tethers with the kill switch [because] they might get twisted up in the tether.”"

The article says he "bailed" from the snowmobile. I would rather say that he "fell off". The organizers, obviously, took some decent safety precautions. That could've been significantly worse then just a bruised knee or two.

People who do not understand the machine and get ideas at night "while drinking" maybe need a little more seasoning and maturity before doing a major event. Close call...
