Great news! Harken has made millions at the expense of taxpayers. His inside deals have made him and his family very wealthy. To make matters worse, Harken is to the left of Fidel Castro in politics. He won't be missed.

Don't be surprised if Michele Bachmann moves back to Iowa and runs for this senate seat.

6 terms? yeah I'd say you're well passed the point of stepping down. Two terms and done for all, after that you get too comfortable and are more willing to do whatever is necessary to stick around, instead of what the country needs you to do.

Sen. Harkin set in motion the events that eventually cost me my job on 2010. I was selling ATMs when Sen. Harkin initiated legislation limiting the surcharge on an ATM to $.50. (a typical surcharge at the time was $2.00 to $2.50) It was a time when gov't was going after the big banks. Unfortunately, Sen. Harkin didn't do his homework and assumed it was the big banks that were getting the surcharge. That's true only on bank owned ATMs, but the majority of ATMs are owned by small business owners: convenience stores, gas stations, grocery stores, liquor stores etc...are owned by the guy/gal down the street-not big banks. They purchase an ATM for $2-3,000, put THEIR money in the ATM and make money from charging a $2 surcharge whether you take out $20 or $200. The threat that their ATM profits would be cut by 75% or more put the industry into a tailspin. Current ATM owners were going to stop operating their ATMs and nobody was buying a new ATM until they were sure that Sen. Harkin's devastating legislation wouldn't go through. Sales dwindled and I lost my job after 9 years. There is nothing more dangerous than someone in power who doesn't have the smarts, or take the time, to find out what their knee-jerk legislation means in the real world. Sen. Harkin would tell you he was looking out for the poorest of us who couldn't afford to pay a $2.00 surcharge, but the fact was that the poor, or anyone else, could use the ATM at their bank and not pay a surcharge. Many states already were not allowing a surcharge on Gov't EBT cards that the poor receive. His legislation never passed, but in it's wake he harmed 10's of thousands of small businesses and cost many people their jobs. Thank god this well intentioned Senator is finally stepping down. Good riddance. We surely don't need more like him affecting our lives, and if his legacy includes looking out for the little man, never forget to include that his actions adversely effected the little men he was supposed to be helping. Here are some articles regarding his proposed legislation: http://www.humanevents.com/2010/05/20/atm-small-businesses-under-fire/

That's going to be one heck of a retirement party! Senator Harkin has served well ALL of his constituents - regardless of age/ethnicity/political affiliation. He is the poster "child" for what a great politician should be! THANK YOU Senator Harkin for your service to Iowa and to the people of the United States of America.

36 years in the senate? There needs to be 2 term limits. After 12 years these people have lost all touch with reality. Look at Wellstone. Well meaning guy that got so drunk with power he broke his promise by running for a 3rd term.

I hope he and his family enjoy the millions they made in back door deals at the expense of the American taxpayers. 36 years in the Senate? He should have been thrown after the 1st financial scandal not retiring with impunity after the 36th scandal.
