Tell me again how they managed to let the clubhouse get to such a state of disrepair and neglect that it ended up being condemned. In the 70's it wasn't so bad as I recall. I'm sure no one will claim responsibility for present state. Very sad.
Eric, way to go. There are many things at the U that are "too costly". Keep saying that and you will eventually get things under control.
A golf course? Yet we wonder why tuition and overall expenses are to high. Sell it.
@arspartz All major American universities seem to have a golf course that seem like relics of the past. They're also a requirement for amateur golf, and a place for staff and students to relax. They also represent landbanks for the future, in the event the campus needs to expand for high priority buildings. We shouldn't strip all frivolities down to the bone during economic downturns, just as we shouldn't indulge in every whim in better times. A $20 mil clubhouse seems like the latter. Glad they figured out how to pare it down to something more reasonable.
The golf course never has been funded by students and these renovations won't affect tuition. The athletic department let the course get to the state it is in by using it as a private fundraising playground. It is isn't the intent to point fingers, but new management in the past few years has tried to reverse the old business model and find a way to overcome the deferred maintenance and preserve it as an a University asset for the future. Let's see if they can generate support & raise the funds to do so!
Not only does the U of M have a golf course, it also has Big 10 golf teams. As with football, basketball, baseball, hockey etc, the golf teams have a "home field". It was also open to the public to play on and as a student 40+ years ago I clubbed and beat plenty of balls around it. Good memories.
