Reading this story it's hard to imagine anyone who was less prepared for the outdoor condition or anyone who made as many dumb moves as this guy. Maybe alcohol was a contributing factor. He's one lucky dude. But what I want to know is how much of the cost of his rescue will he be willing to pay? And how about everyone who searched for him. Any words of thanks for those people? I didn't see anything about that.
Thank God he was found and will be OK. I'm sure both he and his wife and family are very thankful for all those that helped search for him. Too bad some people have to go straight to the negative.
Making victims pay for their rescue is an extremely dangerous policy that is universally opposed by search and rescue groups, as it encourages people to put off calling for help until it is too late, thus also putting the rescuers in danger by creating a more critical situation.
If you visits his Caring Bridge website he does thank everyone involved with the search and rescue, "He is in good spirits. He wants to thank everyone along with Search & Rescue, Ross Magnuson and the St. Mary's and Essentia Health-Duluth staff -- and most all, the plow driver who saved him."
Do not ride alone, ever. Enough said.
Every great idea I have ever gotten at 3 AM has always turned out badly.
OK folks, read it again. I said how much would this dude be willing to pay. Nobody said anything about making him pay. My recommendation is that he sell his snowmobile, donate the proceeds to the rescue groups and stay home with his wife so she doesn't need to worry where he his.
I'm glad he was finally found inrelatively good health, but this guy violated the top rule for safety if you're lost or stranded...STAY PUT. Find wood, build a fire, and don't go wandering around the woods in the middle of the night.
