If Jacob Lew is 57, that means that he was born in 1955 or 56 and was in third grade in 1963 or 1964. By that time, judging from my own siblings, cursive was already less emphasized than it was in the 1950s, when I learned to write. We looked forward to learning it, because then it meant that we were "writing like the big kids."
