Could candidates without a spouse run for national office? They already have.
After the President Bush / John Kerry debate, a young liberal gave the thumbs up nod to candidate Kerry. Parahprasing his statement, "Mr. Kerry looked more Presidential!" So let me get this straight, President Bush is the President but in his mind, candidate Kerry looked more presidential. In other word, people have an image of what the President should look like. Sadly today, that individual must take on a "Rock Star" persona. Could a single individual become President? Probably, but then they would have to put their [intimate] social life on hold otherwise TMZ nationally and C.J. locally would have a field day with daily gossip. The other tragedy is an effective person who is not a rock star has little chance of defeating an ineffictive rock star becuase it's all about feelings, not effectiveness.
