It is this type of pressure to lose weight and "achieve" an unrealistic body type that feeds eating disorders.
To LW1: Your letter broke my heart as it sounded exactly like me almost 15 years ago! My parents, mostly my Dad, spent my entire teenage years and my 20s telling me repeatedly that I was fat, badly dressed, unattractive, had bad hair, bad skin, etc, etc. I got letters every month and whenever I went home endless lectures about my eating habits. When I did lose weight it wasn't noticed but when I did . . . oh boy! It's astounding that I DIDN'T get an eating disorder. The abuse only ended when I finally wrote him a 4-page long letter detailing how he had made me feel all those years when he basically told me that I wasn't good enough for him. I honestly don't think he had any idea how worthless he made me feel! You need to put stop to your parents' behaviour NOW. You need to set firm boundaries and tell them to back off or else. If, and only if, you ask for comment or advice on any aspect of your life they can offer it, but until then, they need shut up!
