NCAA ponders new standard for transfers

Under one proposal still being researched, student-athletes wouldn't have to sit out a year in four sports if they carry a 2.6 GPA.

Why won't the NCAA force coaches to sit out a year? They are constantly chasing the next big paycheck. Meanwhile the players are treated like property. These kids should be able to leave and play without any restrictions.

The NCAA is a joke. Wisconsin already recruits "Free Agent" quarterbacks, i.e. Russell Wilson and Danny O'Brien, and a rule like this would only make it easier to do so. Players will end up transfering from losing teams to winning teams, and the competative balance will suffer.

Predator coaches would be culling rosters for freshmen and sophomores who are not starting. Turn over would be increased and numbers off trasfers would increase. The historical data results would not predict results when the methodology is changed. The NCAA is becoming a waste of time. Seems like a couple of the bigger conferences could start a dialog regarding a new and better organization. Byzantine rules, incompetent officials, beaurocratic blunders, and big money are the problem.

College sports is a place for athletes to compete and they aren't paid even though the 4 sports with a 1 year sit out requirement make millions on these sports. The athletes are objects... I say give them the right transfer without sitting out so they have some power and I like the idea of it being tied to rewarding those with a GPA above 2.6 for the reasons stated in the article. Those concerned about this proposed rule want to keep this unpaid athletes as objects.

Playing college athletics is a privelage, not a right......Why not teach these student athletes, who most aspire to be professional athletes, what committment means? If we start letting kids tranfer at will, think what will happen when they get to the pros and start thinking "well I didnt have to honor my "contract" in college, why should I do so now?"........With that being said, I think the same should go for coaches!

A 2.6 GPA for an athlete is like a 0.2 GPA for a normal college student who actually attends class.

So you have to have a 2.6 GPA to transfer out of Stanford; but all you need is a 2.6 GPA to transfer out of Special Ed University?...Does the NCAA really believe all 2.6 GPA's are equal?

'Playing college athletics is a privelage, not a right'..Yeah, the "right" to go to practice and workouts year-around, so you don't have time to study or work.....I would rather be a full-time student with a job.

Just a thought. Raise the gpa to 3.0, make them eligible right away but require they pay for their first year. That would be fine for families with the cash but the less fortunate would likely have to get a student loan. But at least they would be able to be active rather than sit out.
