It's suspicious that this article doesn't mention the best natural sweetener around: Stevia. This wonderful sweetener cannot get approved in this country because of the sugar beet lobby who are afraid that if the American public really took to this low calorie sweetener, their sales would go way down. It has been used in Europe for years.

smithjoannem - I can't believe that there is another person who knows and loves Stevia like I do!! :) I make batches of lemonade and sweeten it with Stevia -- making it a no calorie HEALTHY drink. I also sweeten iced tea with Stevia. I haven't mastered baking with it yet, but I have packets of Stevia in my purse and the bottle of it at home. My favorite brand is the KAL brand -- you should google KAL Stevia if you want more information (anyone). It is great -- safe for diabetics, safe for children, etc. And the best thing is that it is natural so no one can patent it (which is why we never hear about it!) Artificial sweeteners cause brain lesions, fibromyalgia, diabetes, cancer, among other things... visit www.sweetpoison.com if you have any questions. -Rebecca :) (http://wwww.purifyyourbody.com - visit my site if you want to detoxify your body from all the crap that is from our processed foods!)
