Neoconservatives, who champion a muscular U.S. foreign policy, are united in opposing President Obama's choice for defense secretary.

Mr. Hagel will make a stellar Secretary of Defense. America has been plagued by the failure of neocon policies that have cost us like sin and diminished our security. It is time to put someone who knows about the military from the inside out into this position and put reality-based decision making into place.

What bothers me about Hagel is his anti-Israel comments, but maybe that's why Obama picked him?

What the neocons don't like iabout Hagel is that he dares to put forth the notion that America should choose diplomacy ahead of military action. How dare he think that unilateral military action should not be the first option in any conflict! Heresey to the neocons like McCain and Cheney who's philiosophy has always been to bomb first and question later...

"What bothers me about Hagel is his anti-Israel comments".. Why? The State Department runs foreign policy, not Defense. and the President sets it, not the Secretaries... Defense goes where they are told and shoot when they are told to shoot... Besides - what has Israel done for us lately - or ever? Someday, it's going to be time for it to grow up and join the world. Their call, not ours, and certainly not the call of the US Secretary of Defense.

""What bothers me about Hagel is his anti-Israel comments".. Why?" ______ We don't have room for ANY anti-Semitism in our leadership.

greg62: It's not anti-Semitic to criticize Israel; to conflate criticism of Israel's policies with anti-Semitism is essentially McCarthyism. But the "Israel right or wrong" crowd is slowly losing the battle for public support in this country. Thus the desperation of your tactics.

greg62 "We don't have room for ANY anti-Semitism in our leadership." Antisemitic remarks are against people of the Jewish faith. Concerns about our foreign relations with the Nation of Israel have nothing to do with Judaism. So Hagel's remarks do not reflect antisemitism. But that wouldn't stop you from being against ANYONE Obama nominated.

The neocons want war. They don't care against who. We've spent a trillion dollars on the bogus war in Iraq that was funded by China. There is too much Jewish lobby in the U.S. and they would certainly like the U.S. to fight their potential war with Iran for them. It's time to cut Israel lose. Let them fight their own war.

At a time when we may default on our obligations, have a serious credit bill, are responsible for 41% of the WORLD'S military spending, and spend five times what China does on the military, it makes perfect sense that neocons should want to increase defense spending. Rattle those sabers, boys!
