I believe the perception that the U of M is top heavy is more than perception it is reality!
How about getting back the $800,000 Jerry Kill cost the taxpayers because he was scared to play a mediocre East Cost team?
There should be an outside audit of the U. There are simply too many administrators. The college of biological sciences for example has: one dean, three associate deans, and one assistant dean. Wow, to me that is top heavy unless the college can clearly state why all five "deans" are needed.
Hmm...I remember reading this story...wasn't it just last year? And I remember the U promising to hold tuition increase rates low and then raising it even higher... I would trust anything from the U till they prove it first. Way too much waste going on there.
Administrators control the money. As an employee of the U of M, I have seen administrators tired of doing their jobs hire assistants to do their work. I have seen administrators that rarely show up for work collect over $100,000/year plus benefits. I have seen good employees forced out of the University because they disagreed with an administrator in a meeting. An external audit of the U of M is not a bad idea.
Rememeber when mob bosses told small businesses that if they paid them- their store would not burn down. Just what kind of pressure to reform and contain costs occur when you are given 42 million dollars with no real accountability. Further- the U has had tuition increases TWICE the rate of inflation for last 20 years regardless of amount of state aid- so forgive me if I don't trust their word
All they are asking for is a shifting of the cost from students (that should pay the bill) to MN tax payers that probably don't even go to the school.
Both Mr Kaler and the Regents should provide much better fiscal management and accountability. They can easily cut 42mm per year on a huge budget like theirs. We do this stuff all of the time in the private sector. Get creative, restructure, eliminate redundacies, cut ineffective programs, cut dead wood, automate, partner, reengineer, innovate, etc, etc. With all of the thought leaders at the U, reinventing themselves should be something they can do without additional funding.
Top administrators (Presidents, VPs, coaches etc.) are all getting paid too much. It's as simple as that. This isn't just a problem at the U, it is also a problem at most big universities and corporations. 20-30 years ago, CEOs did not make 100x the salary of their employees. Now they do. There needs to be more balance in the system.
