Dutcher is exactly right. And if Tubby had not lost Al Nolen twice (half a season due to academics and most of his senior season with an injury)and Devoe Joseph due to who knows what, he would have several more wins and NCAA tournament appearances.

I was fortunate to see that team play twice/Illinois and Iowa...wow....they were unbeatable. Hard to get a seat in the "barn" that year.

That rout of Indiana was nice/79-60, but that 20+ victory at Indiana in '92 was heaven.

Maybe Hall was calling Luther Darville for money?

Dutch is a quality coach who should have coached for another ten years. Unfortunately he was sand bagged by an academic hack president of the U. This hack forfeited a very winnable game and assumed guilt. It's American justice to assume innocence until proven guilty but not for basketball players at the U back then. When you look at the long history of the U, there have been two quality presidents in the last fifty years: Malcom Moos and Mark Yudoff. The others are mediocre pretenders who made a lot of money tending a sinking ship. Kale's recent letter to alums, trying to explain away low national rankings is another poor effort.

@lindy, your comment brought back memories from that IU game. I was there, too, and that ranks as one of the best. I looked it up . . . it was actually in 1994 and the final score was, get this, 106-56. The Gophers took out many years' worth of frustration on Bobby Knight that day. At some point in the 2nd half, Bobby just gave up and sat on the bench for the rest of the game. . . priceless.

When I attended the U, Dutcher was just hired--but it was Mychal Thompson selling his tickets that got them in the NCAA doghouse. Laid-back, low-key guys like Dutcher would not be successful today. The $$$s are too big--and if Tubby is the first coach to win in Minnesota--and not end up in NCAA jail--it be a major accomplishment.

This team is the real deal. Look how much they've progressed since the beginning of the season (the first half of the Northwestern game notwithstanding). Solid shot for the final four right now.
