Nixon: A legacy of 'light and shadow'

The only president to resign, Richard Nixon would have been 100 on Wednesday. He's honored in his native state.

Compared to today's Republicans Nixon was an unabashed liberal -- in both economic and social issues. That says a lot about Republicans in national offices today. They turned on the party of Eisenhower/Nixon long ago.

Nixon was very similar to Obama in that he was kind of back in the shadows and you never really got a clear understanding of where he was coming from.

@mplsjim - I tend to agree. On the other hand, Harry Truman or JFK wouldn't be welcome in today's democratic party either.

sadsadsad said "Nixon is the reason I left the GOP and never returned." .........Nixon got us out of Vietnam and was a voice for those of us who were the "silent majority". LBJ never bothered running for reelection even though he won in a landslide in '64. When he killed 58,000 in Vietnam, it tore the country apart and made Iraq and Afghanistan look like a walk in the park. Watergate was nothing compared to that.

Compared to today's politicians Nixon was a honest person.
