What a tremendously off-base review. Once again, Mr. Royce can't keep it in his pants. It's one thing to compliment the dull production of Aida, but it's another thing to use phrasing like this: "How refreshing to find producers with the audacity to believe that this community's work is important and worthwhile, with the potential to export on tour." This implies that no other theater company in the Twin Cities 'believes in the community' or has toured shows. Simply incorrect. Please stay on topic the next time you review a production, Mr. Royce, and stop making outlandish, false accusations of every other theater company in the Twin Cities. You may not want to burn your bridges.

I saw the production last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. The voices were amazing and I mostly loved the set design and costumes. Some things were distracting and a bit off-putting (like Amneris' costumes, the temporary swathes of drapery occasionally showing up, and the spotlights directed into the audiences eyes). I'm not sure exactly what was a re-imagining, the story was the story, the songs were the songs, etc. If changing the costumes to some imaginative anachronisms is "re-imagining", well, I guess he did it. It just seemed to me a really good production of "Aida".
