Hartman: Without Ponder, Vikings had no chance to win

  • Article by: SID HARTMAN , Star Tribune

If you want an expert's opinion on the Vikings' 24-10 playoff loss to the Packers, former NFL MVP Rich Gannon said the Vikings would have certainly had a legitimate shot to win Saturday night had they had a healthy Christian Ponder.

Excuses, excuses. Why did the Vikings veer from what worked during the 1st drive? Ponder was irrelevant to the outcome.

Sid, Ponder or no Ponder this vikings squad never had a chance against the Packers in a playoff game and everyone knew it. The vikings "Super Bowl" was last week (like it is every year) when they beat the Packers in the HumprtyDome. That is as good as it gets for the vikings year after year after year because they simply do not have the ownership, front office, coaching staff or players to legitimately compete for a World Championship. The only thing thing this current vikings New Jersey majority ownership group cares about is selling as many tickets (and soon to be PSL's) as they possibly can at the lowest possible cost to them and that cannot be disputed. If they cared at all about the quality of their product we would have won a NFC North Division title by now and be hosting a playoff game instead of traveling to an opponents stadium as the 6th and last Wild Card seed.

Sid, you already commented in your last interview the Vikes didn't have a chance as it was. Now you're sugar-coating it as if Ponder could have hoped for as much, GB offense way too much for D. Lot's of holes nut Webb does have talent. Size and speed, and prior experience, he'd be an awesome receiver if properly groomed.

Sid you failed to mention Spielman's bone headed move of releasing Sage Rosefelds....how come?

A team that was expected to win 6 games at best makes the playoffs, and the posters are vilifying our second year quarterback and newish head coach. Thanks, Vikings, for a heck of a season!

There should be a picture in the paper this morning; a close up of Rogers walking off the field with a huge smile plastered over his face, after they scored a touchdown after a five yard penalty for 12 men on the field. That picture should have the caption that read, "We lost to the vikings last week, and they said that cost us a bye week. They were wrong."

My fear? Not losing games but losing time. Peterson is not getting any younger, and I fear by the time the vikings management figures it out, it may be too late. This team has a huge nucleus of talent. But now you can see the importance of one single player. Put Rogers on the vikings team, and what do you think would happen with the odds makers in LasVegas.

No chance without Ponder? First he is average at best. Second a starting QB can go down anytime. What you really are saying is the Vikings Staff doesn't have someone ready to step in to play. If poor Webb didn't have a chance they better find a number two that does.
