After so many loses in the Big Ten, Smith now decides its better to play the starters more minutes.

First, the redshirt topic. I hope Wally can hit his shot and eventually earn playing time in meaningful games. I can see the game where he gets to play and estarts making baskets. I predict before the end of the season he will be a better shooter than Coleman. Second the rotation, Coach Smith has always used a mass substitution system with his various teams. This year he finally has four or five healthy strong tough horses to ride into the toughest basketball conference in the USA. Common sense says Coach needs his depth to give the starters a break and beat down the other teams. It's all good. Go Gophers.

There's no question that Tubby only agreed to dropping the red-shirt in the hopes of getting Wally's brother. I hope it works. It would have been better for the team this year and going forward to have him red-shirt.

There is a program-coaching technique called marginalizing, and some coaches hate it so much that when they even get possibility that it might be in any program, they go on high alert looking for it. Others call it arranging for failure, and some around here called it by a player's name, fairly or not... Some head coaches do it to play the fans against a player, some do it for personal and cultural biases, and some do it to get recruits. Without going into details, let's hope that Smith is treating Ellenson as a player in his own right and isn't using him - because if Smith marginalizes even one player, the MN and WI high school coaches - and opposing coaches - will have his number and MN will end up recruiting at reform schools.

The Gophers have enough players this year to start taking a look at what players on the bench are getting minutes. When there's competition for playing time, it's interesting to see the response of other non-starters. For example, if you're having shoulder problems--you shouldn't go out of your way to show everyone it hasn't affected your eating ability.
