Let it be noted that the "police leaders" referenced in this article are the desk-bound bureaucratic politician cops. The "real" cops in the rank and file that actually patrol our streets and put their lives on the line for us, are overwhelmingly pro 2nd Amendment.

Rep. Michael Paymar, DFL-St. Paul, incoming chair of the House Public Safety and Crime Prevention Policy and Finance Committee, doesn't even have his terminology right. An "assault rifle" allows the operator to switch to an automatic or burst fire mode, and as such has been illegal for many years.

@jarlmn: Can you provide a citation or did you just make that up?

I cann't decide if the gun zealots are stupid or just don't care about public safety. The issue is not about the average hunter's gun or even about the average handgun owner's gun, it is about the high power high capacity weapons being used as the weapon of choice by mass killers. That and the body armor adorning the bodies of mass killers. These people and the ones yet to act are choosing to use weapons that we can stop them from having as an option for their arsenal. Prove to me that the average gun owner depends on body armor and high power high capacity weapons for their personal protection or hunting pursuits.

I will accept "reasonable" gun laws when the left accepts "reasonable" controls over the ballot box like voter ID.

Why do anti-gun zealots insist on pontificating on a topic they know nothing about? The typical AR-15 uses a medium powered cartridge. It's ideal for coyote hunting. It was recently approved in Minnesota for deer hunting, but many consider a borderline cartridge for deer if a bullet with modern technology isn't used. The mass killers aren't using body armor either. Bad reporting is responsible for people thinking the killer in Sandy Hook, or the killer in the Aurora theater used body armor. They wore cloth vests not a whole lot different from what a photographer or fisherman might wear.

'I will accept "reasonable" gun laws when the left accepts "reasonable" controls over the ballot box like voter ID.'______You are more accommodating than I. Why not treat voting the way buying a gun is treated right now? In MN, I need to show ID, fill out a questionnaire, get a background check, and possibly wait a week to get my gun. I can't buy a full automatic in MN, but in states where it is legal, I would also need to get fingerprinted, pay $200, and wait roughly 6 months to get approved.

"I will accept "reasonable" gun laws when the left accepts "reasonable" controls over the ballot box like voter ID."________ Excellent point! How can we trust the judgement of liberal politicians when they don't even care about the integrity of our elections?

chuckdancer - "I cann't decide if the gun zealots are stupid or just don't care about public safety." Your comment is typical of the gun control crowd. Your choice of words to characterize people who believe in the 2nd amendment, is evidence that it's not gun control you and your ilk are after, but people control.

But you can get these guns at Gun Shows, etc without background checks, etc. SO, then do we have a Voter Show where we can vote without Voter ID????? The argument is silly and not equivalent.
