Souhan: In one of Dome's top games, Ponder stood front and center

  • Article by: JIM SOUHAN , Star Tribune

Whatever else happens in his career, the Vikings second-year quarterback will always know what it means to beat the Packers in a big game in December when the noise in the Dome becomes, for the squeamish, more like a hallucinogen than a sound.

What needs to be determined is if his best is good enough. Is that all there is? Can he throw deep, or does he just need deep guys who can catch the ball? They seem committed to him; now get him some receivers. AP can't carry the whole load every season!

Ponder played today like a 2nd year NFL QB should play. I have been critical of coach Musgrave at times this year but give him credit for game planning to Ponder's and the Vikings strengths during this win streak. By guiding the Vikes to the playoffs Ponder still can be that franchise QB the brain trust was looking for when the Vikes drafted him. He should continue to get better and he will get more help around him. There are a lot of QB's with better stats than Ponder who are going home now. QB's can win some games but teams win championships which is why the Vikes are still alive. By the way the Skins just beat the Cowboys with 100 yds passing and 200 yd game by Morris. Sound familiar? I think the Vikes are starting a trend.

Good game by Ponder. I'll give him some props. But hope he can get better than this cuz this won't cut it in the long haul. But,he is getting better. At this point the Vikes are dead without AP going beast every week and running for 175yds plus. Go Vikes.

Ponder played an average or less then average NFL quarterback game. 234 yards is less then most NFL QB's average per game especially with a running back running for 200 yards weekly. It was better but still not good. Still can not find secondary receivers. So Souhan he has a long way to go. But it was a great win!

Ask yourself how good Ponder would be if he actually had a set of starting Wide Receivers to work with. Can you honestly say that any of our receivers would start the Packers? Answer this, how would Ponder look if he had the benefit of throwing to AJ Green, Calvin Johnson, Brandon Marshall, or Andre Johnson...yup, that's right, he would look a hell of lot better. He needs WRs to make the next step, and for those that say Griffith, Russell, and Luck look so much better let's see how they look next year. Cam was amazing last year, but took a huge step back until he figure it out at the end. It takes time for a QB to develop and in this league you need starting caliber receivers. Trade Harvin and get Fitzgerald and Dwayne Bowe. Let's line up with those two, Rudolph, and the great one (AD) next year; and then we'll see how good Ponder really is. No doubt it will be a lot better.

I've been critical of Ponder as well. However, today he proved he hasn't hit his ceiling yet. He made some bad throws, but he also nailed a few crucial throws (That incredibly important 3rd and long completion to Jenkins with 2 minutes to go, for one). That was CLUTCH.

How great is it to have a kicker that you can have total confidence up to 60 yards? Kudos to AP, Ponder, Harrison Smith, et al....but seriously, Blair Walsh has been a huge difference maker this year. Watch out Pack, Vikes will be dangerous in the playoffs!

Nice game by Christian Ponder! Instead of picking apart any miscues today, how about just giving him a high five for a job well done. Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither is an all pro NFL quarterback. He's a second year QB with less than half a season played during his first year ... a quarterback improves game by game and he just had a great one. How about we just say good job Christian, we hope you and the team do as well next week, and leave it at that.

@alextheturk - "234 yards is less then most NFL QB's average per game" ....................................................... 234 x 16 games + 3,744 yds. Puuuullleeeeeeeease tell me 3,744 yds is bad! LOL!
