Obama sure know how to make his demands look good. "Give ME everything I want, and vote on that. Sometime in the future, I might possibly consider thinking about maybe cutting something. Maybe" If the republicans fall for this, They will lose a lot of support in the future.

The American people voted for Obama and the priorities he clearly stated during the campaign. Republicans should quit obstructing the will of the American people.

If the Democrats cant figure out we need more revenue than 2% paying more and some huge cuts this will never get done. I say off the cliff.

It's funny when people act like the American people unanimously, or even overwhelmingly support the presidents position. If that were the case the House would have a majority of democrats as well. Since it isn't both sides need to compromise, and Mr. President doesn't seem to take that seriously and he should. He needs to stop campaigning and do his job.

I'm getting a $6 per month raise in Social Security. Wow, and they want to cut it more? Boehner is really waiting til next year, isn't he? He wants to be sure he's still Speaker of the House before he wrangles the GOP off the cliff. I would just like to see Congress do what they were elected to do: legislate and govern instead of obfuscate, delay and sabotage.

re: Maybe" If the republicans fall for this, They will lose a lot of support in the future...... If Republicans don't compromise here they will lose big time in 2014

I'd be Dour too if all I had to offer was a meaningless tax hike on the higher income simply as a punitive measure. The Democrats, including the "honesty challenged" President have done NOTHING for months, but suddenly it's the fault of the Republicans? Blaming someone else...seems like a familiar behavior. Cut Spending!

Obama won the election, in which he stated very clearly that he would raise taxes on the rich (ie, the only people in America who can afford to have their taxes go up!). Yet, this is the sticking point. Repubs won't allow taxes to go up on anyone, certainly not their base (the rich). As such, we should go over the cliff and then vote on the Obama tax cut. Happy New Year!

I hope the rules take over and the DOD is cut big time. The military is costing 57% of the deficit. Wake up America.

Republicans need to take the cuts to Social Security OUT of their last minute offer. It is a poison pill that makes it impossible for Democrats or the President to accept their proposal. The GOP leaders knew well in advance that it could not be accepted, so cramming it in at this time just shows that they are playing politics and aren't taking their jobs seriously. It is also absurd for Republicans to take money from seniors at the same time as they are protecting millionaires from paying even a penny more.
