Be thankful the 22-year-old stepson is not a 28-year-old living at home with no job and not enrolled in college. Sit down with your son and teach him how to budget and be financially responsible.

He should have been taught all this already. I know when I went to school I had to have my parents sign off on my loans? Did you not have to do this? If so, and you feel as though he was wasting money, why did you sign off on such a huge amount. Also, four years of college and no backelors yet? While it seems a waste, did he change his major? I know people who did that and yes it added a semester or two. Also, the night classes comment, not everywhere offers night classes, I know my collge only offered one or two and only one was part of my degree the entire time I was in college.

All due respect, but the stepmother did not say her stepson was not working (per Amy's comment that he should get a job.) I know I used some financial aid money to fix a car, pay off credit cards (that were maxed out due to having to purchase books before the aid came through). It's not "fraud" if the vehicle is used to get you to school and the credit card debt was caused by educational expenses. I'm not saying this young man has made great choices, I just don't think it's as "irresponsible" as StepMom paints it out to be — financial instability is a reality most college kids are experiencing.

I also wonder how many serious financial discussions StepMom and Dad had with this guy before sending him off to the world. (And no — "sitting down with him" at 22 when the bad decisions have already been made doesn't count.) Parents need to be proactive about financial counseling and stop being so shocked when their barely adult kids didn't magically figure it out on their own right away.
