The head of Anytime Fitness is promoting a "get fit" bill that would offer tax incentives for health club dues.

Having a health club membership doesn't mean that you'll be in better shape. You have to use it, just like that bicycle that's probably in your garage. A number of HMOs already offer discounts for people who use the gym regularly, and it doesn't require tax dollars (that we don't have).

Exercise has been proven to prevent and heal a large number of diseases and conditions, including improving mental health. Our society (and government) eventually pays the price for unhealthy people, in one way or another. This effort is an excellent compliment to the Health Savings or Health Reimbursement accounts that only some businesses are able to offer their employees. The bottom line is, anything that helps our society get physically and mentally healthier is good financially and culturally.
