Fasching picked to succeed Gagliardi at St. John's; some alumni upset

The pick to replace legendary coach John Gagliardi is a former player and assistant there, but he's not Eden Prairie's Mike Grant, and that troubles some supporters. One called the search process "a colossal waste of time."

Interesting to read all the comments. Some of us know Gary and Mike from the team. Your opinions are just that.

I speak for all Johnnies when I say this was the right decision. End of discussion.

Oh wouldn't it be cool if we raised this much fuss over who was teaching math? Just sayin'

We had a golden opportunity to replace the most revered coach in the state with the most talented coach in the state (who happens to be an alum). Instead we keep the exact same thing that hasn't worked lately, minus the iconic coaching figure head. What a mickey mouse operation.

A couple of things. 1. Loyalty is a lost quality and although I'm a 'purple and silver guy' I do admire SJU's loyalty. 2. Mike Grant was smart enough to know that you don't want to follow a legend ... just as his succssor at EP will find out someday; as they found out at Washburn years ago when Weimier retired and at Stillwater when Thole retired ... and when Les Steckel replaced Mike Grant's dad. 3. I've walked both campuses and been in both sets of workout facilities and in both stadiums ... what kid wouldn't choose UST over SJU? In St. Joe you have Sal's and LaPlayata ... you can't really go into St. Cloud as the Stearns County 'townies' will beat you up. At UST you have country club level facilities and the run of a major metro area. SJU is a wonderful school and winning football is part of the culture but even as a purple and silver alum, it's good when both programs are doing well. Best of luck to coach Fasching.

People talk like Mike Grant would return St. John's to national prominence. He's never coached at the college level. At EP, he has every possible advantage you can think of. These advantages do not exist at St. John's. Another guy about 25 years ago was in a similar position after winning numerous state titles at Cincinnati Moeller. Remember Gerry Faust?

It should be noted that Todd Fultz was coached by Grant at Forest Lake and also helped Grant in coaching after he graduated from St. Johns.

Grant, the right choice? Really? Does anyone here know his coaching ability? We have a bunch of Sid Hartman's commenting. Maybe not a great choice in Fasching and I too am concerned he will have too much allegiance to existing coaches. If. He does he will make it difficult for himself. Jim Gags is not an O Coordinator, and everyone knows it. Additionally, recruiting is a must; meaning getting out there and talking to possible SJU players. Gary, you say not much will change. I caution you on that statement. Change is absolutely necessary and making it will add to your chances of success. I personally hope for immediate change and quick success.

A bunch of whinning Johnnies during the Christmas season; OMG! Relax fellas, everything will be OK with your new coach. Life will go on and SJU football will compete just fine with the new coach who, by the way, is much more qualified than Grant. If these two guys were vying for a CEO position of a Fortune 500 company and you had one candidate with 17 years experience at the corporate (college) level (Fasching) and one candidate w/o any experience at the corporate level (Grant) who do you think would get the job??? Of course Grant pulled his name from consideration when it was obvious he wouldn't get the job; it was obvious he was over-matched by Fasching's credentials (experience) and he didn't want to get egg on his face!
