Fasching picked to succeed Gagliardi at St. John's; some alumni upset

The pick to replace legendary coach John Gagliardi is a former player and assistant there, but he's not Eden Prairie's Mike Grant, and that troubles some supporters. One called the search process "a colossal waste of time."

Grant must have overplayed his hand. Wanted too much money and total freedom. For a guy with no college coaching experience he let his ego get the best of him. The guy is a high school teacher that makes a couple of thousand bucks a year to coach a program with a large population of motivated kids from upper middle class families. He had his chance to step up. He blew it.

I'm not going to speculate about Grant's withdrawal on Thursday, but on the surface, it does seem as if Fasching is a questionable choice. I certainly will not say anything bad about the guy personally, but one has to wonder about a couple of things. Most importantly, Fasching has been on the coaching staff over the last few years when the team has regressed tremendously. Not only that, but he's the school's head recruiter. If the talent level has dropped precipitiously since Glenn Caruso has turned St. Thomas around, how is Fasching going to be able to turn the tide? Secondly, I sincerely hope this hire isn't merely because Fasching is a really nice guy who has paid his dues and is being "rewarded" for all of his years of service. That would be a totally irresponsible and illegitamate reason to make this hire. At the end of the day we have to trust that the SJU search committee did their due diligence. But at the end of the day, I just question the logic of hiring an assistant coach who was part of a staff that had really fallen off over the past few years. It seems unlikely a vast turnaround will occur. But who knows, if Mike Grant withdrew, maybe this forced SJU's hand...

Im not clear on why Grant would want this job. He's got a cushy AD position that must earn over 100K, + his summer revenue and there is no pressure whatsoever. Trade that in for following a legend. Hard to do. Good luck Fasching!

I hope that many of you realize that there is the salary that the school district pays, and the salary that the boosters provide for the top level or enrollment schools in Minnesota. The salary may at EP may have been more then what SJU could match.

I predicted several weeks ago that the "national search" would result in a Stearns County hire. SJU would have been better off not pretending to do a national search.

Good for St. Johns in not buying into the Mike Grant myth.

Best of luck to Fasching, but as an SJU alum I wanted to see Mike Grant as HC.

The most underwhelming hire imaginable. The whole "national search" and 10 panel search committee seems to be a fraudulent front for a predetermined setup. I feel duped.

When the search started, Grant was the first named that came to mind, but Fasching was the second name. Both are good coaches, both have had success at the high school level, and bothwould have been good choices.... Good luck Gary.

kesumm doesn't have a clue when he says, "Bethel get (sic) all the Pentocostals (sic). Bethel is a Baptist-owned college -- not Pentecostal in the least bit.
