Fasching picked to succeed Gagliardi at St. John's; some alumni upset

  • Article by: DENNIS BRACKIN , Star Tribune

The pick to replace legendary coach John Gagliardi is a former player and assistant there, but he's not Eden Prairie's Mike Grant, and that troubles some supporters. One called the search process "a colossal waste of time."

fittobetied - I think you are right, in reading between the lines. I bet they did not offer a huge salary, but I would have thought they could better Grant's current salary. Maybe not. I agree that Fasching may be a status quo choice, but then again, maybe it is wrong to lump him in with the lack of recent success. Maybe we should commend SJU for rewarding loyalty. Time will tell. I expected the choice order to be Grant, Ramler, Fasching.

If Fasching was the best candidate, why wasn't he the "coach in waiting?" If Fasching was the best candidate, why did they need a national search committee? In the end, this is Division III football and they made a Division III decision!

Wow, I'm surprised. He would have been my 3rd choice. Grant withdrawing sounds like St. John's doesn't want to spend the money to do it right and they didn't have the guts to choose Ramler. I didn't want to see the old coach go but when he did I was looking forward to some exciting changes in the program next season. They should have chosen Ramler, he would have gotten the most out of the talent that's there and his teams would have been entertaining.

The best they could do was a 2007 picture of the coaches with John G wearing Univeristy of Minnesota clothing.

Grant probably insisted on bringing in his own people and SJU Administration balked at sending Gags Jr. packing, along with the other assistants. Which really makes one wonder if retention of the assistants wasn't a guarantee that Gags negotiated as part of his resignation.

This announcement is great news for EP football. Grant must have come to his senses over Christmas and realized how good he has it there.I would imagine there are several football coaches at 6A school's that are disappointed.

wmturcotteDec. 28, 12 4:49 PM

I would imagine that this guy's been the actual coach for the past 15 or so years.

kesummDec. 28, 12 4:54 PM

Grant could retire from EP with a full pension now. Have to imagine that is worth 60K a year. Add the SJU salary and he is way ahead of where he is now. Can't imagine he would not have taken the deal if any representative offer was made. UST gets all the choice Catholics, Bethel get all the Pentocostals, St Olaf and the Gusties fight it out for the Lutherans, SJU better hope for some high school football hot beds near St Cloud. Maybe EP wants a red faced screamer as coach and Grant can move to the Bank. His credentials rival what Kill came in here with.

If Grant didn't coach for a school with one of the largest class sizes in the country he would be a nobody. Football is all about numbers. I think it is one reason that EP won't split the school like so many others have done.
