So weird, I was just reading about Schwarzkopf today (in Thomas Ricks' The Generals). Vividly remember him from Desert Storm. RIP.

The man who made "bovine scatology" a household term, but more importantly one of the greatest military tacticians of his generation. God speed, General. I was proud to serve under you in '91.

My late father was a combat noncom in the Pacific, and he always said that the General struck him as his kind of officer: brave, hardworking, cared for his troops, practical, and didn't love the limelight.

a true American hero. There to get the job done, but not to take the credit. RIP General Schwarzkopf!

General Schwarzkopf had the foresight to stay out of Iraq when presented with the opportunity to invade. Schwarzkopf wrote "Had the United States and the United Kingdom gone on alone to capture Baghdad, under the provisions of the Geneva and Hague conventions we would have been considered occupying powers and therefore would have been responsible for all the costs of maintaining or restoring government, education and other services for the people of Iraq". Had "we taken all of Iraq, we would have been like a dinosaur in the tar pit -- we would still be there, and we, not the United Nations, would be bearing the costs of that occupation." Wish Bush the junior would have listened to this guy before invading Iraq.

I have wondered many times where the likes of this man was lately when we needed someone with sound leadership. A great man and we are better off for him having been here. I was ever a military guy but I salute him and am thankful he served our country...

Never having served under him, but always having followed his leadership, throughout my years,he is truly one of the great leaders of our time. RIP Geneal Schwartzkopf.

He was a true American and a great leader, putting the safety of his troupes first and the politics a distant second, as it should always be ... He went in with his forces and did the job he was sent to do ... that is beyond admirable in this day and age ... I only hope his love of country first continue in all of us ... RIP, General ... God Bless ...

I will always remember his famous news conferences where he showed video of the war and in particular, the one of an Iraqi crossing a bridge in a car, and the bridge disappearing behind him and the comment by the general, "the luckiest guy alive in the world today" or something close to it... followed by, "can you imagine what he saw in his rear view mirror?" You could always count on some things from this guy; a sense of humor, no politics, and dedication to his job. We could use a lot more like him in this world today.

A true patriot with a profound love for his country. RIP.
