We can start by dealing with facts and not myths - from both sides. And get off the firearms=violent society kick. In a society where nearly everyone owns machetes, machete violence numbers will be high; where nearly everyone owns an ice pick, ice pick violence numbers will be high, and where nearly everyone owns a gun, gun violence numbers will be high... Get past the "how" numbers and go to the "deed" numbers. In the world, are Americans more violent than most? Turns out that when the deed is counted, according to the UN Office of Drugs and Crime 2012 report, we are below average. Is that a problem? And will removing the method reduce the number of deeds, or increase the number of deeds? Don't go "fixing" things until you know for sure if things will get better.

The idea that some Americans in the US are justified in feeling "threatened" by the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq or the drone strikes against al Qaeda is ridiculous. You may agree or disagree with how we conducted the response to 9/11 and you may well question why we ever invaded Iraq, but saying those military actions somehow threaten those in the US has no connection to reality.
