Hundreds of children have been backed over and killed as officials debate guidelines for a 2008 law that calls for manufacturers to improve visibility behind passenger vehicles.

For staters be careful and know when children are present and where they are before putting a vehicle in gear. It's not very difficult and saves lives, injuries and related costs. No need for cameras if drivers are responsible.

I know in my new(well, new to me) car, I cannot see out the rear window since the trunk sits so high. I must use my mirrors. Of course, it's always a tragedy when this happens, but it is not as if it is NOT preventable by due diligence.

Can't see out of my SUV in the rear very well either. Dangerous when backing up and a challenge when backing up a trailer. Rear view camera is a great idea. Standard on some luxury car versions and an option on most new cars. It's up to the buyer to select this option. Don't blame the manufacturers. The cost seems well worth it.

So is this like the gun control issue? Its the vehicles fault she didnt double check where her child was? Its a terrible thing that happened but changing vehicle laws doesnt solve the problem...

You can have all of the laws and regulations you want, but it still comes down to personal responsibility as a driver. You need to be cautious and be aware of your surroundings. Don't look just once or twice, but take time to look that extra time and back up very slowly. How many of these accidents could be prevented if drivers would simply be a little more cautious and attentive? It amazes me how many people back out of parking spots/driveways and do not even look.

Just another beaurocratic overreach. A few of these may have been unavoidable. But the vast majority are driver error. Cameras only come on new vehicles. There is no fix for older cars. Well other than proper driving technique. And adding cameras will not fix this. Drivers will soon ignore the cameras because they will be adjusting the radio, playing with their phones, etc.

It is the old adage :"Do not make your problems-my problems". As a parent there are many heart breaking things that go on in a life time. We cannot guarantee against death in any form. We also cannot prevent it with insurance of any type--including making a law that acts like an insurance against "this or that from happening again". Take the precautions and stop looking to the state and big brother for an answer.
