Has Gophers football turned the corner, or does it remain miles behind the competition? The answer is open to interpretation.

Yes,all of the above is true. The Gophers have competition from all the pro sports, but that can also be an asset. The Twin Cities are a marvelous place to live and players can look forward to many employment opportunities. In short no other Big Ten school has a large metropolitan are to play in. Can we begin to see these things as assets? There is not that much difference between successful and being a step behind and Kill will make that difference. We forget things such as the fact the Gophers were very close to going to the Rose Bowl under Mason. Finally Gopher fans need to lighten up. Why would a recruit come to Minnesota after reading comments made by so called fans?

I would be okay with the gophers going 4-4, 5-3, 6-2 in B1G play. Go to a major bowl every 4-5 years. That is not asking too much. The "traditions" you talk about were not there 15 years ago. Winning brings that on. Wisconsin has been going down for 4 years now, thats why bielma left. He won with Alverez players and now they were 7-5 in a very down year for B1G. Iowa not any better. Minn beat Iowa 2 of last 3.

sorry garykhanson but what you are trying to sell Sid Hartman has been doing this since the 50's!Glen Mason close to a Rose Bowl??? Close only applies to horseshoes.Do you have inside info. that Kill will be the difference? Try this next fall: If the Gophers win on Saturday and the Vikings lose om Sunday walk into to work on Monday and say "what a great game this weekend". The usual response is "what r u talking about" or "o who did the Gophers play"??? The fan base is a joke.

g5thistime do u really think that's why he left Wisconsin? Check United States geography and the location of Arkansas then u will know why he left! U also forgot to check the Gophers record against Iowa the previous 10 years! Since 1981 Wisconsin and Iowa have been to SEVEN Rose Bowls!

Phil - Revisit the 1984-85 seasons and then do another column. One hire can turn the gophers around. Don't tell me 60,000 season tickets sold didn't create a great gameday atmosphere. I was there!!

Convert to NDSU. 28-2. 2 national title games and a passionate fan base of 25,000-30,000 that will follow their team! Or have Jerry kill become (vp of football operations) & hire NDSU Craig Bohl...they are friends and it's a win-win situation.

Gophers are a joke and now they have a sickly coach who is a backout artist. You can't figure out why the bleachers are empty by October??

Kill lost all respect, and the program any hope, when he did the $800K dipsy do v. UNC. That move showed in his mindset that the U of M can't and never will compete. Embarrassing and disgusting. Isn't Country Jer and his staff paid, er overpaid, to play and win? Country Jer is total BS as was Brew, but at least Brew was entertaining and deluded enough to schedule the likes of major programs like USC. Country Jer is a bad joke on the U of M and the state of MN. Close down the program, save$ and put some bucks into IM bocce or maybe badminton...

I like how everyone reads so much into dropping UNC from the sked. Sure that wasn't a great move, but lighten up just a little. Kill is going to recruit who he recruits, and we'll see if he can whip them into a semblance of a team. Still too early to tell, but he still looks much better than Brewster did at this stage. Brewster was on, what, his 3rd offensive coordinator by now. I'm not ready to give up just yet.

The canvas has been stretched, sized, and primed. A few brushes have been selected, However, we still need to select all of the brushes, set up the easel, and begin painting. Comparing a coach's effort for two short years to a work of art is like comparing Phil Miller's writing to Rick Reilly's. It's absurd and makes no sense. It might be possible for Phil Miller to be as good as Rick Reilly in the future but it is much too early to be making the comparison.
