BRYAN, Texas - Adam Lanza's mother was among the tens of millions of U.S. gun owners. She legally had a .223-caliber Bushmaster rifle and a pair of handguns, which her 20-year-old son used to kill 20 children and six adults in 10 minutes inside a Connecticut school.

We reduced drunk driving accidents without a total ban on alcohol. Then again, we didn't think more alcohol was the solution to drunk driving. It's no surprise that since the gun industry gave almost $39M to the NRA that their solution to this issue would involve the purchase of even more guns. Can we be that stupid? I believe we are.

Bill Moos is incorrect. It is not a privilege but a right. The same as voting and free speech. Both of which are also dangerous but are equally defended. That seems to be what is missing from the discussion. Just as we could say no one "needs" early voting or the ability to make disrespectful videos about muslims we allow and defend that because it is a right.

The British are coming! The British are coming! America IS again under attack! We ARE under attack! We TeaPublicans ARE standing up for our Constitution and for America! We are going to force that guy obama to deport CNN’s Piers Morgan! Morgan has, through CNN, launched a personal crusade against guns! There is a petition on the White House webpage stating Morgan “is engaged in a hostile attack against the US Constitution by targeting the Second Amendment.” We TeaPublicans already have over 28,500 signatures! The petition also states “We demand that Mr. Morgan be deported immediately for his effort to undermine the Bill of Rights and for exploiting his position as a national network television host to stage attacks against the rights of American citizens!” We TeaPublicans ARE going to take back America in 2014 and 2016! And we ARE going to take that Piers Morgan guy back to England too!

If it's a right, we can deal with it the way South Dakota and other states deal with abortion rights. Anyone wanting a gun has to wait three days, undergo "counseling" by an anti-gun fanatic, complete with stats on gun-owner suicides, accidental homicides, lots of photos. Make the rules for owning a gun shop so restrictive that there are only one or two in the state...we could do that, or we could ban high-capacity clips, semi-auto pistols and assault-type rifles. Both are legal.

There is one element that remains absent in this, and other, debate(s). That would be common sense. We have lots of laws, many of which are ignored because they are either not enforced or the penalties are negligible. Most people know that shooting someone is wrong - we simply have removed personal accountability and fallen back on 'it's someone else's fault'. This is a glaring demonstration that our society is on the decline.

@galljc: Just as there are restrictions on free speech (perjury, libel, plagiarism, inciting a riot, etc) there are restrictions on gun rights. Can you buy a machine gun, bazooka, M1A1 or predator drone? No. Most of the discussion is about restricting assault-style weapons, large magazine clips, and cop killer ammo. Our 2nd ammendment militia (aka National Guard) will not be affected. So don't worry. No one's talking about taking away our shotguns or handguns. We'll still be able to protect ourselves and hunt deer.

The fact that the mother's own guns were used to kill her and all the other innocent people speaks volumes in this debate. I'm willing to let people own guns, but please keep them locked up. If someone uses your gun to kill others, you should be liable, as you are a careless gun owner. Of course, in this recent shooting, the gun owner has already been punished, and the sick perpetrator is no longer among us, so who do we blame or punish?

Guns, and most weapons, such as knives are illegal in Mexico - How's that working?

justsayingDec. 25, 1211:18 AM

That being said I shot a squirrel just now.

Wrong headline. Gun control is 100% about politics and nothing else.
