Two big players leaving Ramsey County stage

Commissioners Tony Bennett and Jan Parker both were elected to the board in 1996, and both have made an impact.

So much for the myth that no one has ever been voted out of office because of their support for a sports facility. He's part of a lengthening list of booted officeholders which will likely grow when Minneapolis has its next elections. But at least Comm. Bennett had the courage to stand for reelection rather than some in the Legislature who were outspoken in their support for a taxpayer-funded stadium and then decided that one term was enough or suddenly felt an urge to spend more time with their families.

I worked with Jan Parker on a library study commission. She was tireless in the pursuit of good outcomes and encouraged thinking outside the box. If all politicians worked as hard as she did at serving their constituents, the world would be a much different (and better) place.

You can be a good person and care about constituents but finding ways to create projects and spend the money of others to build your own legacy does not warrant adoration. But that is the Minnesota way for many.
