I have known Sammy for over 20 years and have always appreciated his honesty, his wit and his sense of humor. Sammy is one of a kind. Thank you Jon for this great profile.
Sammy has worked to help the powerless his whole life, and LOVES tweaking the powerful, be they Republicans or DFLers. He has enough courage for 10 men , which is what keep us pals coming back even though he is completely missing the restraint gene.
Quick story on obscure political cheering: this spring, when the Angels came to town, Sammy met Mark Trumbo with a heckle of "Don't name names!" Yup, he was grinding on a 20-year-old kid referencing DALTON Trumbo, the blacklisted screenwriter of Sparatacus who refused to name names in front of the House Unamerican Affairs Commiteee.
As if that wasn't obscure enough, the next tie Trumbo comes up, Sammy yells out, "I Am Sparactus!" the movie Trumbo wrote that broke the blacklist. Of course, all his pals, who are as big a bunch of wiseguys as Sammy, follow it up, one-by-one, yeling "I Am Sparactus!" Just like in the movie.
It was hysterical, if you got the joke. Sammy is small dude, but he makes a big noise with that huge heart.
Going to miss you Sammy.
Love this story, love people like him, those who have the guts to afflict the comfortable. There are far too many conformists in today's society whose goals are to maintain the status quo. That is not what we need. We need people who stand up, speak the truth and make people uncomfortable. And to be sharp, and witty at the same time, better. Yay to the rabble rousers, the folks with personality, the thorns in people's sides. Thanks, Sammy! And you may have more time left than you think...no doctor has a crystal ball. XXOO best wishes.
