Like most reactions to firearms, parental opposition to this measure is emotional, not rational. Many details to be ironed-out notwithstanding, parents must come to the realization that times have changed since they went to school. We do not live in sappy-happy mythical Lake Woebegone. No matter how hard some parents wish otherwise, schools today are tempting soft-targets for terrorists and crazies. So, which would you rather do here, parents? Wish-upon-a-star for the bygone era of your own sentimentalized school days and impotently hope that voodoo-banishing certain guns will keep your kids safe? Or will you poke your heads out of the sand and get with the realities of what is *really* needed to protect your children in the 21st Century? As emotion and expediency always cloud these issues, I'm sadly not betting on a reasoned and rational response from many parents.

I've done my share of hunting and I'm pretty familiar what can be hunted. I'm at a loss. Can someone tell me what species out there is either so plentiful, or so large that you'd want to have a magazine of 30 rounds in your semi-automatic rifle?

100,000 elementary schools, each having up to 24 glass doors; 2 million armed guards to patrol this many doors. Are you crazy???? Add in school buses, movies theaters, and shopping malls and you tell us just how more gun-toting people will address the gun violence in the country. 2nd amendment zealots put this "right" above the sanctity of human life.

" parents must come to the realization that times have changed since they went to school." ... what's changed is that it's all about being able to have any kind of firepower you want and stockpile them no less. The NRA has been all about weakening gun regulations. It's time to put a stop to that.

If the NRA would like armed guards at every school, let's pay for it with a huge tax on firearms and NRA membership. Their lobbying efforts have weakened our gun laws and resulted in deaths that should never have occurred.

Finally someone (NRA) has a suggestion that will actually save lives.

jarlmn - A call for armed police in every school is an emotional response not a logical one. Some do confuse fear and anger with logic.
