Banning assault rifles will not secure schools. As retired police office I completely disagree with Stanek. We should be spending our time and money figuring out how to make schools impregnable. The gun that used at Newtown didn't meet the legal definition of a an assault weapon, but I don't think anybody bothered to check on that.

"Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek said he stressed the need to screen for mental illness and talk about youth desensitization to violence at a White House meeting about gun violence Thursday."........Unfortunately, there is no way to predict who among the mentally ill will be a mass murderer. Never-the-less, providing help for the mentally ill is a worthwhile goal for many other reasons.

Start by enforcing existing laws. Knee-jerk bans aren't going to do anything but get politicians booted out of office.

Stanek is a level headed law enforcement officer who responds well in crisis situations. In this case he is urging better control. This is not a knee jerk re-action. Better control on gun acquisition is not a bad idea. Jumptrap (a legal gun owner)

It is long past time to end the 'gun-free zones' that are allowing such mass murders to happen. Why does the media ignore the fact that such massacres always happen in schools, malls, etc, where the killers KNOW they will not have any armed resistance? School personnel who are licensed and trained should be allowed to carry concealed in schools. Once word of that gets out, such school shootings will come to a halt. Isn't it obvious the current model of being defenseless is NOT working??

Stanek sounds like reasonable voice in this debate - it's not all about gun control; he recognizes the impact of violence in our society to include movies and video games.

LOL..even Rich Stanek is being looked at like a traitor from these zealots. Here's a tip for my fellow gun owners. You won't even feel whatever neutered, watered down regulation that might be coming. And you should want to keep guns out of the hands of the wrong people just as much as anyone else or YOU'RE part of the problem.

Ya---let's just do nothing and hope this problem goes away. Arming teachers is the most absurd idea I have heard of in my entire life. It's like when Archie Bunker wanted to arm passengers on airplanes to stop hijackers.

I hope he asked Mr. Holder and biden why breaking our laws to provide weapons that killed americans was their agenda with fast and furious, and now they've looked to new laws to break. Please live within our constitutional standards rather than trying to create a more lawless society. This is not the american standard. If the administration was not so focused on it's political advancement, they would be focusing on mental health not constitutionally reserved objects.
