Mass shootings - a classic example of the recency effect. While the shootings are tragic and shocking, in terms of importance, they do not compare to the reelection of Obama and the fiscal cliff, and probably others on this list. Approximately 200 Americans die in mass shootings each year, compared with thousands who die by individual shootings each year.

Most of the stories on the list got swept under the rug pretty quickly, as a form of Main Stream Media "attention deflection". However, two stories that seemed to be in the news every day, for months, were Trayvon Martin and Whitney Houston.
