"It offers this country a better chance of understanding what went wrong and what correctives are needed than the reckless Republican mudslinging that for weeks dominated public discourse in the aftermath of the calamity." Mudslinging??????? Dominated public discourse?????? Are you kidding me?!?!?!?! If it wasn't for the Republicans, this would have been buried, forgotten and NEVER investigated. The President was "deeply insulted" that ANYONE would even think that his administration would put our folks in harms way. Well.............who's insulted now?!?!?! All this opinion piece is is a setup for excusing this adminstration of any wrong doing. Well, we're smarter than that and we will be spreading the truth until people on both sides of the aisle understand what happened and that if it wasn't for the Republicans and Fox News, the President would have hid this from us.

mudslinging? Weren't the republicans found to be correct, or why were people "removed from positions"? ....so nothing bad happened, and nobody was at fault, is that it? The Republicans just made stuff up... but people were removed from their positions? Geez I'm confused.

I am outrage by this article. All spin sticking up for the Democrats, all spit aimed at the Republicans, who did nothing wrong in this matter! And not even the vaguest pretense at journalistic objectivity in this atrocious example of yellow journalism. And how typical of the New York Times these sad days. Oh well, Merry Christmas everybody!

A "financial commitment" is needed to protect diplomats? This is hilarious. All that was needed was a phone call to Special Forces in Italy and Benghazi never would have happened. The diplomatic corps takes a back seat during presidential elections.

A commitment for new money? Their budget was cut because after internal audits State was found to be wasting millions a year in their payoff postings like Paris, Berlin etc. One consulate was flagged for spending over $100k for new china settings even though the existing service was only 2 years old. Once again, it's not a revenue problem, is a spending problem.

Shorter New York Times: Republicans were correct with all of their questions and concerns over Bengahzi, but they were big meanies for bringing it up.

circleoflife said: "If it wasn't for the Republicans, this would have been buried, forgotten and NEVER investigated."-------Nonsense. This report came from an investigation ordered by the Secretary of State long ago. The idea that the State Department wouldn't want to look into how its security failed makes no sense. The Republican "mudslinging" that this refers to was in connection with the ridiculous uproar over Susan Rice's comments on Sunday morning TV shows, not the actual attack. Everyone concerned has always believed that the actual security breach should be investigated and now it has been.

Some real facts? Give me a break - Petraeus scandal breaks, Clinton doesn't have to testify because she had a fall and a mild concussion a week before she was to answer questions? All of these side shows to distract from getting all of the "real facts".

"if it wasn't for the Republicans and Fox News"---the world would be a better place to live without the sensationalist lies of FOX news. There are not many news outlets where you can't be fed know lies at truth. FOX news is definitely the king of that garbage heap. It's not a news outlet at all. Its a propaganda machine geared towards luring in the uninformed and uneducated so that wealthy people can manipulate them.
