the use of "average" is misleading to Star Tribune's readers and I am disappointed that they would use it. After all, averaging someone whose income is a billion with someone who makes a million you come up with a very different answer. Why not use the *median* tax raise? Or are you intentionally trying to fool people?

As a conservative, leave the poor alone. I have no issue with taxing the snot out of middle class voters ( i am middle class) who voted for this regime

The media still can't bring itself to admit you can't "cut taxes on the poor" when they already pay none (federal income tax).

"it would end an enhancement by Obama that makes the credit available to more low-income people who don't make enough money to owe federal income taxes." It is not a tax increase if they don't pay any Federal income tax.

What they would pay in FICA goes back into the economy anyway.

If social security is so underfunded, why was there a cut in the FICA payroll tax in the first place? Next: social security withheld from your paycheck is not a "budget crisis" item, as it is self-fund by us, unless these crooked politicians intend to continue to use your social security funds and add more IOU's to the social security trust fund. Next: why continue to allow the wealthy to have less of their earnings reportable on a w-2 form, which means less subject to FICA taxes, then also cap the amount of earnings subject to FICA taxes? You all should be able to see what games are being played with your taxes and future. We need to clean house in Senate and House, and add term limits.

He can call on the Senate Democrats to pass that bill or he can be responsible for the largest tax increase in American history." = Going BACK to a rate that was once in place is not an increase to me. It's just getting BACK to responsible taxation.

Boehner is promoting "plan B" to try to shift blame. Pure politics. The GOP is still in denial about the last election and still serving themselves before the electorate.

icandomath - this is an article from the AP, not Star Tribune.

The earned income tax credit has much simpler name: welfare. It's a transfer payment from those who pay taxes to those who don't. It's a horrible idea to have Americans who have no skin in the game.
