Income from sales and lodging taxes, one barometer of a city's economic health, hasn't shown a broad effect.

I can hardly wait to see what the downtown St. Paul Macy's does on January 1 when they aren't obliged to remain open because of their sweetheart tax deal with the city a few years back.

So is the lockout bad or not? How does the Xcel center even keep the lights on? Is it still open?

I thought having a professional team was an economic boom to the area it was located in? Are you telling me this isn't true??? (Gasp). So instead of spending money on Wild games people spend their money somewhere else....(Double Gasp) Wait, does that mean the only people that really benefit from having a pro team are the owners and players of said team......(Triple Gasp).....

If the businesses opened and relied on the NHL team to bring in their business, that's their own fault. It's not the job of the NHL and their fans to support local businesses.

41 days(not including preseason and playoffs) should not have that big of effect on local business. Sounds like they have bigger problems the other 324 days of the year.

I wonder if people understand some of the restaurants are taking a hit and going to support them. I'm planning on going to Tom Reids! That said, i'm sick of all these negative comments about hockey, about the businessess supporting the hockey culture, etc. They make it a fun experience on game days, lay off them.

A lot of people who don't go to hockey games or any other professional sport games will stay away from going downtown to shop or dine if there is a game going on, because they don't want to be accosted by disorderly drunk fans. Personally, I stay away from downtown if the Twins or Wolves are playing here for this reason.

Professional sports franchises are a fickle mistress. Best not to rely too heavily on them.

The article illustrates why the logic of public financing for sports/stadiums is often specious, at best. Money spent on entertainment (sports) is "discretionary spending", and if not spent on sports, will be spent elsewhere - movies, bowling, concerts, plays, etc, etc.
