Gophers guard Austin Hollins has become an elite defender. And the junior relishes the job and still scores nearly 19 points per game.

Defense IS fun... that little move you make that shifts the shooter's feet or makes a shooter's shoulder drop that little bit before he gets the pass to shoot, or when you get in his head and he fights to stay with the shot and rushes it? -- you did that - you made that miss - you OWN that shooter. That mental domination at will is fun. (ok, a little perverse kind of fun, but some players live to be feared by the offense.).. Opposition coaches give a great shooter their 20 points a night and move on with plans - but opposition coaches can't ignore a great defender - everybody playing and coaching respects a great defender - on every play.

I was at Bloomington Jefferson when we beat Kevin McHale's Hibbing team for the State B-Ball Championship. The hoops Coach motto was, "he who does play big D will play on the little v." Offense will have some off nights, tough Defense is always there.

One sports mantra will always be true "Defense wins championships". That's why Ray Lewis, JJ Watt, Chad Greenway are awesome, they stop guys. Good to hear Austin Hollins relishes the ability to stop the other team. Brings back shades of defense stalwart Damien Johnson. Go, Go Goldy.
