Many school district boundaries do not match city boundaries. Very common. If this was such a priority for the homeowner in the story, why did they not buy a house inside the known boundaries of the Edina school district? It is not a secret... this information has been well known, for a very long time.

Carbonfiber....couldn't agree more. There are situations like this throughout the state. In most cases, the school district boundaries were set before the city boundaries. People bought their homes knew - or should have known - what district they are in.

Edina resident/Edina schools. Seems obvious to me. You can fight city hall and win. In this case I hope they do.

Happy our kids went to private school. Most things "public" are a mess.

The school district boundary was established a long time ago. Every time that I have purchased a home, I made sure that I knew what school district it was in, what school attendance boundary it was in, and the likelihood of school attendance boundary change. Realtors always have that information. This is a small section of wealthy Edina residents who think they can use their wealth and elitist attitudes to push their way out of Hopkins schools, not because Hopkins schools are in any way bad, but because they weren't savvy enough to make a residential choice that they wouldn't regret later.

chrondog ... There's nothing in this issue about public vs private. Both Edina and Hopkins have excellent public schools!

During the flap over airport noise a few weeks ago, Edina residents said they had no pity for south Minneapolis residents because they knew the airport was there when they bought their houses. Well, you know what? These Edina residents knew which school district they lived in when they bought their houses. I offer them the same advice they offered families in south Minneapolis: if you don't like it, move.

These people are a joke. They knew they were in the Hopkins district when they bought their homes, then want to change the rules later. Their home values then would increase if boundaries change, what a fraud! Wall Street would even be impressed at that investment. Hopkins then loses revenue they are entitled to. Buy a home in the Edina district if you want your kids to go there so bad.

It does seem reasonable for people who live in Edina to also have their kids attend Edina schools. And yet it is also ok, if there is room via open enrollment, to attend a school near your city. I live in Edina, my daughter wanted to complete her schooling in Minneapolis, where we moved from. Minneapolis was supportive and she graduated from South High, where she, btw, had a fine education, graduated from college, et al.

I am a Minnetonka resident and both of my children went to Hopkins excellent schools. I would assume with the high level of education of Edina residents that these families were well informed of where their children would attend school when they purchased their homes. Now, they want to change long-established district borders, and in the process, gut money (and potentially teachers and programs) from Hopkins. Super selfish, super elitist. And then if they don't get the answer they want from the School Board, they intend to waste further time with our State Legislature. Wow, if that's not elitist, I don't know what is. And trust me, if it does go that far, the well-organized Hopkins parents will have something to say about it.
