I get a kick out of how it's illegal to bait, but all the major outdoor stores carry many types of deer corn and other food attractants. What do they think they're being used for anyway? Especially once the season starts. I think the justification for many "hunters" is that wealthier land owners (or people with more time on their hands) can plant food plots to "bait" deer, and that's perfectly legal. Definitely not a 100% black and white issue

You're pretty stupid when it comes to deer hunting/baiting there jsimple3. A food plot is not bait. Its clover or alfalfa. Any grain present within close proximity of a deer stand that is not a result of normal agricultural practices is considered bait. That's very black and white for 98% of all deer hunters. What I can't figure out is ethical portion of doing this. How much skill is involved to kill a deer when it walks up to a pile of corn near your stand? None.

I'm an avid hunter and have wondered why baiters do not lose their right to hunt for a few years rather than a monetary fine.

What nonsense! I've read dozens of comments on these pages where brave sportsmen testify how they (and they alone, no tree-huggers please!) are responsible for saving and maintaining our wildlife. It is incomprehensible that one of these brave individuals would actually do something as cowardly as "baiting", for deer, bear, or wolves. I suspect that Liberals are involved here somehow, and are most certainly to blame for this unfortunate bad publicity. The vast majority of sportsmen follow the rules to the letter. If there is any evidence to the contrary, it's best buried. Deep. Like sportsmen did with wolf carcasses prior to this year.

How much skill is involved in shooting a deer over bait? No more than shooting one over a food plot. There's a valid case to be made for allowing bait; Wisconsin does. There's also a valid case to be made that food plots are no more sporting than bait.

Yes, food plots are "deer baiting" and please don't telll me they are not, and yes, I am a deer hunter! Also, several stores sell these "blocks/scents" that attract deer, and why do these stores sell them while it is illegal to use them during hunting season? Don't get it. As for laws, take away someone's right to hunt for a lifetime if they are caught and fine them like $10,000.00 - don't make penalties so small. By the way, I don't hunt over a food plot, I thought they were suppose to help all wildlife to survive through out the year. I think baiting wildlife is just wrong, including baiting bear, etc.

Let's face it...most of these people just want to sit in a deer stand and drink. They shoot an unsuspecting deer from a hidden position while it feeds on bait. Then they brag to their buddies about their superior skills in the woods, go back home to crash on their couch with a bag of cheetos until the next season rolls around and they can again try and find some self worth.

The way I see it; Food plots are a type of bait. But whether baiting is acceptable is an open question. We use bait in other situations don't we? I was taught; Game laws are the minimum standard for sustainable harvest. Every sportsman should have higher ethical standards That provide for fair chase. How he does that is a matter of personal preferance and standards are best enforced by the community at large. I don't shoot grouse on the set. Timandtia doesn't hunt over food plots. It's not important how you show respect for the quarry. It's important that you do.

Bait piles and bucket sets. I've watched as hunting and trapping became dumbed down with all the focus on numbers and none on fair chase or spending time in the woods. Even the DNR got on board with the pronouncement that we needed to accept ATVers riding the trails as a valid method of grouse hunting. It's all about pulling the trigger or piling up the most coon and none about the work and the experience leading up to the moment you pull the trigger or set the trap. Every year it gets harder to defend hunting and trapping.
