Chip Scoggins: Children, not sports, warrant our embrace

On an unspeakable day, safety on the field takes a serious backseat to the welfare of our children. Every last one of them.

Thanks Chip, my four children are grown, and in several difference states, therefore, I cannot hug them, however, I can call them, and I will more often. Will hug my one year old, and five year old grandsons today. (GREAT ARTICLE!!)

I'm glad you stepped out of your sports commentator role and spoke from the heart as a father. What will we say to our children when they ask why the U.S. has the highest rate of deaths by guns than any other country? What will we say to our politicians who don't want to touch the gun issue? This is not about gun control. It is about common sense gun safety, and reasonable laws. Start with background checks at gun shows. Do we really need assault rifles and guns that hold up to 100 rounds? Really? After you hug your kids, then tell them what you are going to do about it.

Chip: Great column. I am also a person without children, however, I really, really feel the pain of the parents who's child didn't make it through this terrible mess. A sad day for all of us, and I am glad that you took time to show that you are a parent first!
