Minnesota’s vulnerable groundwater

Sandy soil and porous rock in some parts of the state allow contaminants from the surface to leach rapidly into groundwater, making those regions susceptible to high levels of agricultural nitrates in drinking water. A survey of 1,100 residents in 2011 showed that many counties had wells exceeding the health limit of 10 milligrams per liter.
