Reusse: Love stirs the pot and brews up a big cup of ego

Love is taking the Timberwolves back to the future with his immature rant over a contract that he signed 11 months earlier.

There aren't many guys in the NBA who can dominate the boards and then go out and shoot threes at the same time. That's what makes Love so valuable. But timing is everything. He should have known better than to be so candid when he isn't completely healthy and his game is lacking confidence. When Love isn't shooting well and not playing much defense, he's more vulnerable to criticism.

Your a great player but a contract is a contract. You signed it, you know first hand injuries are part of life and it just happens the Timberwolves have had their share all at once. Once everyone is back the winning will be easier and you will have the team that can compete. Don't bring the subject up again until your last year of your contract. Then lets see if you have controled not being injured during that time and put up last years numbers 2 more years.

Love is a GOOD player but not great. To comment about his contract at this point in the season, not even one year after signing it, is very poor judgement. Even if Ricky gets $80M for 5 years, that is only 3% more per year than what Love gets. There are a whole lot of people who would take $15.5 mill/year and not complain one bit.

Love comes off as being a prima donna. Hey Love. The team played better without you, going 5-4 without you and 5-5 since your return. You showed the first game back that it was all about you, hoisting up 25 shots like you were the white mamba. That's not how Adelman wants his team to play. It's all about sharing the ball. But the ball stops when it gets to you. Stop pouting over only getting 4 years and 62 million. You come off as a spoiled brat, and until you start playing a lick of defense, you aren't worth a max deal. Faried showed that tonight, as you were schooled by a second year player. Use that as motivation to earn a big extension, and lead us to the playoffs. Now that you have Rubio to guide you, there are no more excuses. You pouted after the Olympics that you were the only player from that team who hadn't been to the playoffs. If you don't get there this year, you have no one to blame but yourself.

Looks like Rubio could use a little less Love and little more Gasol.

Two things I haven't seen/read brought up yet: 1) When Love CHOSE to sign the deal, he wasn't a 26 pt/13 reb guy on a pretty good team and an Olympic champion and a first-team All-NBA player, as Wojnarowski stated; he was a 20/15 guy on a 20-win team. Still good, but maybe not a max player. And 2) Who says the 5-year max designation won't be his in 2015? The team only gets one for the duration of the 7-year CBA. I agree with most of Reusse's take, but if you envision Love making these comments over dinner, which he did, they sound less vitriolic. He should have known better, though - especially when talking with Wojnarowski, who's a relentless Kahn-basher. Maybe that's what Love was after, but he can't come out and say he was hoping for a more positive column when he was talking to Woj.

Love still has the potential to be a great NBA player. There is no doubt that he rebounds with the best... plays average defense usually, and against Denver couldn't hit the broad side of the barn with his shot. Tonight he played about 8th on our depth chart - and that is with B. Roy, R. Rubio, and C. Budinger all out with injury. Bottom line, Kevin, move your feet more, your mouth less.

Methinks Love just wanted to create a controversy so that everyone will forget that he's been lousy this year. Okay, "lousy" is an exaggeration, but he certainly hasn't played like a star, and come to think of it, isn't that the comment by Taylor that Love finds so offensive?

gadflyDec. 13, 12 2:29 AM

Oh, and by the way, Love came back 10 games (or 22 days) ago, which is longer than the NBA's preseason schedule, so "coming back from an injury" really should no longer be an excuse.

Timberwolves fans know the history and have suffered a lot longer than Kevin Love has. He didn't need to say it we all know this stuff already the public isn't as mindless as he thinks. Lets hope this doesn't turn into a Stephan Maurbury headcase.
