Schafer: In giving to charity, it's best to chart a plan

The problem donors are running into these days is "activists" for one thing or another, posting erroneous and misleading accusations about certain charities on the internet, on Facebook, in particular. Then, other well-meaning people keep it going without themselves, researching the validity. Some of these internet accusations are almost libelous. Most of them are naive of how nonprofits actually work. Speaking of that, the other error is for donors to maintain that EVERY penny of their donation should go straight to "people in need." Overhead is *not* a sin, folks. In order to get services out to "people in need" there must be public relations and outreach. There must be staff to deliver those services, etc. Suffice to say, do your research on an organization before you make ... or not make ... a donation.
