With little margin for error, Vikings need 'clean' game

I like that we can run the ball. But Leslie you have to quit looking at Ponder with rose colored glasses. Ponder did absolutely nothing the whole game. It's a quarterbacks job to get the team in the end zone. He didn't do that. Peterson did. Our defensive backs had more yards than our receivers. This is not good, Leslie. No matter how much you hate the passing game, our passing game, at some point, you will have to open things up. And keeping Ponder as the starter is not going to accomplish that. Another horrific effort by Ponder. He has the lowest yards of any quarterback in the entire NFL. Do you get that? In other words, 31 quarterbacks are doing a better job than him in passing yards. To be a winner, you have to have a passing game. Right now, we don't.

Question: if the Vikings win the next three games (against some daunting, but apparently beatable, opponents), are they not nearly assured of a playoff berth? The only realistic scenario for elimination that I could find (using a playoff machine on an Entertainment and Sports Network's Web site) under those circumstances involved the 8-5 Giants beating the 11-2 Falcons next week. I'd say the Vikings are largely in control of their own destiny ... true?

There is not one person that observes this team that does not think that joe Webb gives us a better chance to win. Ponder can throw bubble screens and quick slants. How does that loosen up the defense? nice guy? At least when TJoke was behind center he made opposing defenses respect the deep ball. Ponder is literally a carbon copy of John David Booty

Wow! Anyone recall when announcer Trent Difler won a super bowl ring? Strong defense, running back and minimize mistakes. We still have weak O line pass blocking, worst receivers in the league, and no Percy. This team is markedly improved, doing far better than ANY experts thought in August and will continue to improve. Find someone to catch deep, replace 1/2 the O line and Ponder will develop.

We don't want another Trent Dilfer, who by the way could occasionally get the ball downfield. We want a strong armed, dynamic playmaker. Someone like, like.....wait for this....Joe Webb! He has more highlights in a few games than Ponder has in 23. How much longer must we be made to suffer while rag armed Ponder tries to figure things out? How many more seasons must we sacrifice in the name of developing someone who should not be developed?

The Vikings coaching staff has shut down the passing game the rest of the season. They are still convinced that Ponder is the Franchise QB; but internally it sounds like they have acknowledged they don't have the receivers to pull of passing more than 15 times a game. They are going to do the best they can with the limited offensive talent they have. Without Harvin this team has zero passing game. With Harvin they were at least averaging 210 yards a game. It sounds like they believe if they add a true big number receiver next year along with Harvin and Rudolph it will open up the passing game for Ponder.

One more point. If Ponder walked in as rookie with a receiving corp that had Randy Moss, Chris Carter, and Jake Reed, do you think he would really struggle? Hell no, the kid would throw for 300 yards every game. That's basically what Daunte Culpepper got to walk into; and within 3 years he was passing for 4000 yards plus. Ponder may or may not be good; but there is no way we can accurately judge him without some legitimate NFL receiving talent on this team. Jenkins is coming off an ACL and he is 30 years old and slow; Devin is a journeyman at best; Jerome Simpson is a classic underachiever who the Bengals didn't even try to keep. Burton wouldn't even be on any other team in the NFL. Jarius is rookie that should be playing slot. Again, other than Rudolph who is not going to stretch the field or Harvin who is hurt; who is Ponder supposed to pass for 300 yards with against NFL caliber defenses. Play action only works if you have a receiver that can win a one on one matchup; or do what BRandon Marshal of Calvin Johnson do which is just muscle the ball from a D back. No one on this team is going to do that; and as a result Ponder who feels like he should throw is pressing himself into bad situations. Give the kids 3 starting NFL receivers and lets see what he can do. Farve looked awesome in 2009 with Rice, Harvin, and Berrian who had a pulse. The next year when Rice was hurt; and it was basically just Harving he looked horrible. Again, QBs need receivers.

Here's what's going down. Due to last years lousy record the Vikes drew an easy schedule that was front loaded with cupcakes. You get a few winsand everybody starts thinking playoffs. Here's what's going to happen. The fans are being set up for another disappointment. The Vikes are not going to win out and then the what ifs begin. Those who know and follow the NFL knew the Vikes really had lil or no chance to make the playoffs. The Vikes are who they thought they were. Lucky to be a .500 team. the rubes will be the disappointed ones....Again!

C'mon, forget about WR's etc..the bottom line is Ponder does not have the physical skills to be a legit NFL QB. It's just that simple.Sorry but that's just the way it is. Case closed. Time to move on!

You could have Reed, Carter, AND Moss and not even THEY could catch some of the wounded ducks Christian floats out there. He routinely hits defenders in the back, teammates in the shoulder, and when he's not overthrowing a reciever running down the sidelines, he is underthrowing a receiver in the middle, on both short and long routes. His accuracy is just awful. Nobody but Spielman thought he was a first round talent, and he's proven that. 99% of the fans do not support Ponder, IMHO. For every hundred negative posts on Ponder, there is one half baked post showing tepid support. The crowd got this one right. For the Vikes to have any chance this year, Ponder must sit.
