That is the type of trade the Twins need to make to obtain high-quality starting pitching.. The trouble is that we don't have the pieces (top young prospects) that other teams want. Freeing up money to spend on the free agent market is a great idea, except that the market is VERY thin (ESPN's Free Agent Tracker), so the few good players (especially starting pitchers) are hard to come by and overpriced (Kuroda $15 mil, Pettitte $12 mil, Grienke reportedly around $27 million per year). Annibal Sanchez and Kyle Lohse are the two best available (how scary is that) and will cost way more than the Twins would (or anyone should) spend.

It's called the price of doing business assuming you actually want to field a winner for your fan base. The Twins are just cheap. Period. The penny pinching fan base can wring their hands all they want over a players salary that they have nothing to do with but the fact is the Royals stepped up for their fan base and anyone expecting the Twins to do the same shouldn't hold their breath.

Finishing last in the Central just became easier.

Thx to Gm of the Royals showing how a Small Mkt low revenue team can pull the trigger on a trade to improve his team and at least make them more competitive for 2013. As A fan I fail to see why the Twins are so passive and not more aggressive making a deal like this. I admit there is alot to chance with trades like this but if a team needs to improve then these trades must be made. Using minor league players in a trade like this one was made should be enough to show the twins that they can make them as well. Ryan u need to be more aggressive if your serious about making this better club for 2013.

Ryan are you asleep at the wheel? How come other small market teams are able to make this type of deal?

Until the Pohlads sell this team and an owner who really cares about baseball comes in, the Twins are a 70-75 win team every year.

The Royals could make this trade and the Twins cannot because the Twins don't have prospects like Myers (we traded them for guys like Matt Capps). It's not as much a matter of "not being willing" to make a deal like this, the Twins aren't able. To make a trade, both teams have to be willing, and nobody wants what we've got. The Twins need to either open the checkbook and sign some free agents (from slim pickings, unfortunately) or we're in for a few more years of lean times.

I don't know how great this trade will look in two years, and the Royals aren't ready to contend yet. I think the Royals jumped the gun by a couple of years making this deal. They'd be better off in two years with Myers and the other guys, and then go make the trade for a top-shelf starter. Shields isn't going to put the Royals into the playoffs.
