Actually, a gay couple from Minnesota DID get married in the very early 1970s. One had an androgynous name, and at the time, only one person of a couple had to show up to apply for a marriage license. The marriage license was completed, accepted, and they got married. First legally married gay couple in the U.S.
And now, 40 years later, we're working to make it official for ALL gay couples who would like to have equal treatment under the law in the country where they pay taxes.

I have a pair of neighbors who have been together since, I believe, the 50's. The Strib did a story on them a number of years ago.
