The rooster crop was as dry as the land on a southwest Minnesota sojourn. But there was no shortage of memories.

Nice article. Horrible spelling of "pheasant" in the title.

Keep in mind that those "vast wastelands of corn and soybeans" you describe are the same lands that put food on your table.

I fear the days of good pheasant hunting in Minnesota are going to be few, and poor is going to be the norm. And the Dakota's are moving in that direction, besides those states getting way to expensive anymore. I feel sorry for the young folk who will never know the real "good old days" of pheasant and duck hunting.

As long as we waste 40% of our corn crop on inefficient fuel, we will continue to see a drop in our pheasant numbers.

hunters want CRP.. Well i grew up on a farm and i hunt on our land. Why should we put good farm land into CRP for City hunters to hunt? You want to hunt good land buy some land and make it your own. That's what we've done. It's not like you're going to let me borrow your Lake cabin for a weekend so i can enjoy the great outdoors. People expect things to be handed to them. Work for it and it's more rewarding. We've personally work very hard to make our land a great pheasant and waterfowl hunting area in western MN. I haven't been out pheasant hunting since opening weekend when we shot our 4 man limit but i plan to hunt next weekend and around xmas. The reason i wait is because then i don't have to deal with the lazy people that only hunt in fair weather. I love hunting pheasants in late December. Less hunting pressure and the birds concentrate in smaller areas. I would rather hunt with 2 feet of snow on the ground than 40 degree sun any day. Like i said earlier people just expect things to be given to them and not have to work for them. Such a sad society if this continues to hold true.

apansch - good farm ground isn't typically put into CRP, it's the marginal stuff. And the average pheasant hunter these days, you really think they're just going to "work hard" and pocket an extra $600K to buy 200 acres of hunting ground? The scale of economics for farm ground has gone beyond the average Joe. Farmers hold all the chips...
